I was on a podcast!

Catch Erin Pritchard as a Guest on The Healing Art of Being You Podcast

Today’s post is a little more on the personal side. I’ve been keeping a secret for a while - I was asked to be a guest on The Healing Art of Being You podcast to talk about sex therapy from a Christian perspective! And the episode dropped last week! I love the title they came up with for our episode: “Divinely Designed for Pleasure.”

Listen to Erin Pritchard discuss EMDR therapy, sex, and Christianity as a guest on The Healing Art of Being You podcast.

The Healing Art of Being You is hosted by Dr. Allison Ingley and Chelsy Damron. I love that both of these women are licensed medical providers, exploring holistic and alternative therapies. I believe both modern medicine and alternative practices have their place in the world, and it’s wonderful to see the two combine at times.

We were supposed to record back in September. A few days before our original recording date, I had a terrible cough, runny nose, and couldn’t speak more than a few sentences without having a coughing attack. No one needed to listen to me in that state, so I asked to reschedule. I was thankful they were understanding and flexible!

I’ve never been on a podcast before; I always thought it seemed like a fun idea “someday.” When Allison asked if I’d join them for an episode on Christian sex therapy, I was honestly caught off guard. I felt SO honored and excited to talk about a topic so near and dear to my heart - one that’s been a merging of my personal and professional worlds over the last few years.

Personally, I am Christian, and was raised in purity culture. Professionally, I started out as a trauma therapist almost a decade ago. I decided to pursue advanced trainings in sex therapy after reading research that purity culture was causing trauma responses in my peers - millennial Christian women. As a trauma therapist, and Christian woman, this research validated some of my own personal experiences, what I’d seen amongst many of my friends, and what I’ve heard from clients over the years.

I decided to pivot my clinical practice to become a bridge between my professional and personal communities and offer sex therapy for Christians, with the goal of helping Christian women and their partners heal from religious-based trauma and negative messages around sex, increase pleasure and intimacy, decrease pain and shame, and coalesce their spiritual beliefs and sexual experiences.

In one of my trainings, I remember Brittany Broaddus-Smith saying “the church isn’t silent about sex, but the wrong people have the mic, and the right people aren’t informed.” This resonated with me SO. MUCH. I’m confident that this podcast episode is a shift towards handing over the mic to those with accurate information for the Christian community about sex, faith, God, trauma, and mental health.

I won’t spoil the episode for you here - but I’d love it if you’d listen to “Divinely Designed for Pleasure” on The Healing Art of Being You, wherever you listen to your podcasts - and let me know what you think! My hope is that this conversation provides a glimpse into the true character of God, conviction that God cares about women’s pleasure, and validated about the impact of purity culture trauma. I also want you to have hope that there’s healing from sexual and spiritual trauma is possible with the wonderful tool of EMDR therapy.
