Is online therapy right for me?

Counseling is a collaborative relationship between a licensed mental health clinician and a client. Professional counselors take a wellness-based approach to helping clients improve their mental health and emotional wellbeing. Often this includes bettering your relationship with yourself, or other people. Online therapy allows for professional counseling services to be conducted virtually, instead of in a counselor’s office. All you need is a device with a camera, reliable Internet, and a safe place to engage in sessions.

Research shows that online therapy is often just as (or more!) effective as in-person therapy. The choice to pursue online or in-person counseling is largely due to personal preference. However, some mental health concerns may require a treatment team or are not suitable for online therapy - this includes severe mental health symptoms, active addiction, or experiencing suicidal or homicidal thoughts.

Is telehealth therapy safe?

There are potential risks and potential benefits to engaging in any type of therapy, whether in person or virtually. The risks associated with online therapy are simply different than in person. Can we do phone sessions?

No. For your safety and confidentiality, we do not do phone sessions. All of our sessions are on video.

Can we do therapy sessions while I’m driving?

No. For your safety, we do not allow clients to engage in therapy while on the road. However, we have lots of folks who prefer to do therapy from a parked vehicle at a favorite park or other safe location.

We do not encourage therapy and multitasking of any sort. You’ll get the most out of your therapy sessions when you’re fully present and able to engage.

Can I see you while I’m on vacation or if I live outside of Ohio?

No. Our counselors are are only licensed in the state of Ohio, so we are only able to work with clients who are physically located in Ohio at the time of service. This is regulated by Ohio’s Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage & Family Therapist (CSWMFT) Board.

What about technical difficulties?

We do our best, but it happens sometimes. We have back up video platforms available. Your counselor will review what to do in case of technical difficulties on either end. We’ve got guides for using your patient portal and troubleshooting common issues.

Will you offer in-person therapy after Covid?

No. Sea Glass has only ever existed as a telehealth provider. We will continue to serve our clients 100% virtually after the coronavirus pandemic ends and have no plans at this time to offer in-person sessions for local clients. Read our full Covid-19 update here.
